The work environment of doctoral students has long been an issue in Swedish academia. It’s high time we take a closer look at this problem again. Have there been improvements? Have things gotten worse? Are there new areas of interest to bring to the forefront?
The final report in the project "Hur mår doktoranden? 2026" is being released on September 21st by Sveriges förenade studentkårer (Swedish national union of students) and Fackförbundet ST (The trade union of civil servants). A panel of experts will discuss the report's results and how we can improve the work environment of doctoral students.
The report highlights a number of notable and, in some cases, very serious problems concerning the work environment of doctoral students, including stress, overtime, discrimination, working while ill, taking annual leave, supervision, and the introduction to the PhD programme. Background factors considered in the report include gender, parenthood, age, stage of the PhD programme, type of funding, and field of research.
